RAR on Wycombe Sound radio

Earlier this month, RAR's Dan and Dora spoke on Wycombe Sound radio. They covered our 2020 plans (a highlight being that we'll be listing all of the participating RAR boat clubs on this website, really soon!) and what else is happening in sustainability in our area. Thank you to the team at Wycombe Sound for having us!

Speaking at the World Rowing Coaches Conference

RAR ended 2019 on a huge high, by speaking at the World Rowing Coaches Conference. This annual gathering of rowing coaches from across the world is one of the most important events in the rowing calendar. We told the assembled coaches how we envisaged boat clubs could make a positive environmental change, and could become community hubs for educating people and driving action. It was also our first public call for boat clubs to join our pledge programme, for achieving sustainability. We are very grateful to both World Rowing and FISA, for giving us the platform to reach so many clubs and national teams. We would also like to thank all the boat clubs and individuals who have already expressed an interest and would welcome many more!

RAR on the Eco Show

2019 saw us working hard to spread the word, locally. In October, RAR co-founder Dan joined Marlow FM’s ‘Eco Show', to talk about how RAR has made its first steps in Buckinghamshire – and how it plans it expand. This also gave Dan the chance to speak to other local environmental initiatives (such as Marlow’s famous ‘Wombles’, who pick litter locally).

Our World Rowing Award nomination!

In October, we were very excited to find out that we were nominated for a World Rowing Award! RAR was shortlisted for the Sustainability Award, which recognises environmental initiatives linked to the rowing community. We were the only UK team to receive a nomination, joining projects from Australia, Canada, China, and Japan. Whilst we didn’t win the final award, we were thrilled to see our work recognised by World Rowing and hope that it inspires UK rowers to enter the Sustainability Award next year. We would also like to extend our congratulations to the Spring Creek Regeneration Project in New South Wales, Australia, who were brilliantly worthy winners.

Our first public event

Back in June, RAR held our first public event: a screening of the documentary, A Plastic Ocean. Thanks to sponsorship from ADEC Innovations, we were able to offer free access to more than 70 members of the general public. The screening was held at the Marlow Rowing Club bar, above the boat club. Our special guest was Dr Geoff Brighty, a Technical Director on the film team, who introduced the screening and spoke about the dangers of plastic filling our oceans. He warned that 'our rivers are very much connected to the wider oceans,' and explained how plastic entering the Thames river in Marlow will eventually end up at sea. The event was covered by local media and by British Rowing. RAR hopes to hold similar public events soon! To find out how you can host a screening at your own boat club, please get in touch.
